Why Are Genetically Modified Gmo Produced?

By Laura Peterson

The other name for GMO is a product of genetic engineering. They are the organisms whose genetic mechanisms has been improved in a different way but not occurred naturally. Genetically modified gmo are currently modified so that they can have a better chance of survival in the herbicide treatment, produce pesticides of their own so as to battle illnesses.

What is the reason behind the production of genetically modified foods? These types of foods are more developed as well as marketed. The reason is because there is an advantage to either the producer or the consumer. The end result is always a low price and a greater nutritional value for the consumer. It has durability also which makes them reliable and the solution the world has been looking for in curbing hunger by supplying the world with adequate food surplus.

Consumers have over time concluded that conventional foods are safer since their records have been established over time. Food authorities may be called upon to assess the safety of such foods. On the other hand, GM foods are assessed regularly. Some systems have even been set up to help in the assessment of food and organisms relative to the human health and the environment.

How do the food authorities assess the safety of GM foods? The assessment of such foods focuses on effects of health directly, that is the toxicity level it has on the people and environment. Also, it focuses on its potential to provoke the allergic reaction to the consumers. There are also specific constituents assumed to have nutritional or toxic aspects, and, as a result, they tend to react differently on different people.

There have been concerns about the human health for a long time now. Allerginicity has put scientists on their toes. Luckily, there are no allergic reactions that can be associated with the GM foods currently. In gene transfer, as much as the probability of a transfer is low, a gene transfer technology that does not include antibiotic resistance is used more.

What are the societal concerns for the environment? One of the issues concerning the environment is the ability of the GMO to escape and finally introduce genes that are engineered in the populations especially since their effects are unknown, the vulnerability of non-target beings to the gene creation. The environmental security of these GM crops differs significantly according to native conditions.

Most people are concerned about the safety of these GM foods. Diverse organisms involve dissimilar genes inserted in altered ways. This means that specific GMOs and there safety should be evaluated on a food by food basis. Hence, it will be impossible to make a general statement concerning the safe consumption of all GMOs.For this, certain standards have to be met and that is the reason they have to pass through some assessment process before they can be released to the market for consumption.

Most of the GM crops that are available on the international market nowadays have been modified with the help of the following characteristics. One of them is the resistance it has to the damages caused by insects, the resistance it has to resist the viral infections and also its ability to tolerate some herbicides. The GM crops are all approved before being available on the international markets.
