Hunting For Catering In The Big City

By Elinor Tran

The range of choices in catering Manhattan has available is a tribute to the diversity in the community and the urban vibrancy of the New York economy. Deli platters and kosher food has long been one of the most popular demands. Regular orders include Chinese, Pizzeria items and sushi.

There is a rising demand for exotic Asian cuisine. This is at least partially fueled by the spate of ethnic restaurants that have been opening up all over the city. Such regional or community cuisine is needed for family events like small and intimate weddings or birthdays, social get-togethers and special occasions.

However, a menu limited to a single ethnic cuisine may not go over so well for large public gatherings or corporate events such as conferences, power lunches and boardroom breakfasts. The attendees tend to be people with diverse backgrounds. The cuisine must therefore be multicultural and politically correct.

In New York, this means coffee with doughnuts, bagels, pancakes, sandwiches and pastries for breakfast buffets and spreads. Sushi, Chinese or BBQ are popular options for lunches. Caterers are called in to handle everything from snacks and open bars for poolside parties to more sophisticated social gatherings for brunches and afternoon tea spreads.

The big wedding venues all have their own list of approved caterers. This is essential because there has to be intensive coordination between the caterers, event managers and all the other contractors. A perfectly planned wedding can end up as a disaster due to lack of communication or goodwill between venue staff and the caterer.

Another rising trend is the demand for green weddings. The catering manhattan companies are no slouches in this regard and offer classy menus that are entirely filled with organic food and dishes made using sustainable produce. Some even use electric vehicles for delivery and offer carbon credits.
