Recipe for Apple Crisp with Cinnamon Oatmeal Topping

By Ben Cook

The smell of homemade apple crisp produced with cinnamon and fresh, in-season apples drifting from the kitchen revives memories of chilly weather remedied by a hot piece of apple crisp a la mode. Like apple pie, apple crisp is a quintessential autumn dessert recipe and American comfort food. Nevertheless, it doesn't require a pastry crust, so it may be created in a jiffy. Including preparation time, this apple crisp can be finished in under an hour.

Ingredients for the Filling:

* Six large apples, * 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, * 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, * Juice from half of a lemon, * 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Ingredients for the Topping:

* 1/3 cup unsalted butter * 1/2 cup oatmeal or old fashioned rolled oats * 1/2 cup all-purpose flour * 1/2 cup packed brown sugar * 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

Peel, core, and slice six big apples. Inside a mixing bowl, combine sliced apples, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, and granulated sugar. Stir mixture properly to ensure an equal distribution of all seasonings.

To prepare the topping, combine butter, flour, oats, sugar, and cinnamon employing your fingertips or possibly a fork till the mixture forms a dry, crumbly topping.

Preheat oven to 425 F and grease a 3-quart casserole dish (12in x 9in x 2in) produced from a non-reactive material, like ceramic or glass. Transfer seasoned apple mixture to the baking dish and sprinkle with an even layer of crumbled topping.

Place apple crisp on the middle rack inside the oven and bake at 425 F for 15 minutes prior to lowering the temperature to 350 F. Continue baking at 350 F for roughly 20 minutes or till the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown. Total cooking time is between 30 and 40 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes just before serving. Apple crisp is best enjoyed with a spoonful of vanilla ice cream or possibly a dollop of whipped cream.

Cooking Ideas:

When creating apple crisp, the ideal apples to buy are semi-tart to tart varieties, such as Empire, Gala, Granny Smith, Northern Spy, and Winesap. In-season, all-purpose apples like McIntosh, Honeycrisp, or Jonagold will yield outstanding outcomes in any apple dessert recipe .

To toss up the flavor, attempt adding a single cup of rhubarb or berries to the filling. Dried cranberries, fresh blueberries, and raspberries are all great when pared with apple crisp. To get a full-bodied apple pie taste, try adding 3/4 teaspoon of nutmeg and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves. If desired, add one cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the crisp topping. Attempt adding more oatmeal or substituting one to two cups of ground granola to get a rustic and authentic apple crisp topping.
