South Africa, the Perfect Location for Fantastic Vacations

By Shawn Schmidt

When you are thinking of where to go and are really undecided, visit South Africa! Honestly, it is a land which offers numerous holidays in one. You could appreciate nature and safaris for a couple of days, clubbing and shows for a few more days, then finish off with Hawaiian style beaches, surfing or various other water sports. Few countries provide this kind of range.

The typical thing that tourists do when they show up in South Africa is that they book a safari in the North Western part of the country, possibly go off to the Durban coast and then take an airplane to Cape Town. It's not really important if you start in Cape Town or if you begin in the Kruger, but it is an excellent idea to book a domestic flight at some point.

Also, if you skip Johannesburg altogether, you are not missing out on much. In the summer, all most Jo'burgers come on holiday to Cape Town, which is a clear indicator of which city is worth seeing! The only reason you would stop in Johannesburg, is to rent an automobile and drive off to "safari land".

South Africa tours usually begin in Stellenbosch, a beautiful College Town with Cape Dutch Architecture. From there you can do some wine tasting at one of the many vineyards in the area and then head off to Spier Wine Farm for lunch or tea. Spier is the location of an unique wildlife program and it is possible to accompany the guides that work there right into the cheetah cages to stroke them! The cheetah's that live at Spier are rather tame but they are still wild animals and so it is essential to take appropriate precautions. Only a few people go in at once and the guide is constantly present. If the cats are looking restless, no-one is permitted in. Petting a live cheetah is truly a remarkable experience.

After your day in Stellenbosch, you might appreciate a walk in the city center. It is recommended you do this whilst all the stores are open, which is till around 5.00 pm. The main road is called Adderly Street and you will enjoy the flower market and the numerous stores. You can also visit St. Georg's Mal and Long Street, which packed with markets and coffee shops.

The people you will meet are either the original African populations, such as the Xhosa and the Zulu, or the paler skinned descendants of the Dutch and English colonialists. You will likewise meet a very large community of Muslim people, which are the descendants of the Indian servants. South Africans are typically friendly, welcoming and helpful to tourists.

The five star safari lodges in South Africa are absolutely magnificent. Even if you are sleeping in a camping tent, it will most likely have a marvelously comfy bed and sumptuous bed linen.

South Africa is a land filled with things to do, from the stunning charm of the arid Karoo, to the historical appeal of the rolling wine lands, to the untamed appeal of the gusty beaches. Make certain you plan a schedule that allows you to appreciate South Africa for all it has to offer.
