TABC Seller Server Certification Information

By Mattie Knight

The selling or serving of alcoholic beverage is a key part to many jobs, many of which are not bartending. For example, servers in a restaurant or hotel may be asked to do this, as well as cashiers in grocery stores. Before you make that first sale or take that first order, it is imperative to know the law as it pertains to alcohol, which can be learned through a TABC seller server certification course.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, or TABC for short, strongly recommends that everyone who is going to sell or serve alcohol for work take one of their certified courses. They do so because there are some very strict laws regarding who you can sell to and when. Without this knowledge, you may be breaking a law without knowing it.

Laws are not the only thing that you will be learning in class. You will also get lots of tips about how to handle an intoxicated person, since you can no longer serve them alcohol once they are drunk. You will also learn how to spot a potentially fake license or ID card, which can be very helpful in preventing you from selling or serving to someone who is underage. These tips can be really useful, especially the first time you encounter these situations.

Now that you know why you should take this class, there is no reason not to sign up. But before you get ready to set a date to take it, you should know that there are special, TABC certified courses that are available from third parties. This type of certified class is the only one you should take, as others are not certified and may not give you the correct or most up to date information.

You have lots and options about how to take this course, so you can pick the one that works best for you. For a lot of people, an in person session with an actual teachers is the best way to learn new material. If this sounds like you, then you can opt for a classroom environment where you learn with a fellow group of students and may be asked to take quizzes and tests.

There are lots of reasons why a classroom may not work for you, in which case you may want to consider taking your class via the Internet. Lots of colleges now offer online courses, and this is similar to those. The streaming video may be broadcast live, or may be previously recorded for your convenience. Either way, you get all the same information that you need to get officially certified.

If you want to really go at your own pace and have the ability to go back and study the material again, then consider ordering a DVD course by mail. This is the same instruction in a classroom, but recorded onto a DVD so you can learn at your leisure.

All three courses give you the same knowledge you need regarding selling and serving laws in the state of Texas. Armed with this knowledge, you can make better decisions and have confidence that you made the right choices and followed the law completely.
