Using the Paleo Diet for Fat Loss - Good Plan or Terrible Idea?

By Bobby James

The reasons for losing weight vary from one person to the next. You can do a number of things to get rid of unwanted pounds. You'll come across many fad diets claiming to help you quickly lose weight. As to the Paleo diet being a fad diet or not, the jury is still out on that. The basic idea behind the Paleo cookbooks is pretty obvious. It involves eating a diet similar to the diet early humans ate during the Paleolithic era. While this diet has historical inaccuracies, at its core, it isn't all that bad. The following will help you get to know more about it.

When you are on the diet, you will not be consuming refined sugar. The only sugar allowed is the one that comes naturally in fruits and vegetables. This is because refined sugar causes energy surges and crashes. As a result, it's hard to stay on a normal energy level. Moreover, it doesn't do your health any good. Refined sugar wears away the enamel on your teeth and damages the rest of your body. So regardless of your weight loss goals, it's a good idea to stay away from sugars that aren't found naturally in foods. Exercise is important for any weight loss plan to really be successful.

You should know by now that any weight loss program needs to involve a good amount of exercise. So if you choose to do the Paleo diet, you need to exercise. Carbohydrates are only a small portion of the diet, and when we exercise, our body needs carbohydrates for energy. Luckily the diet isn't completely carbohydrate free. Still, you might want to adjust the ratio if you hope to really burn calories through the exercise that you need to do to stay healthy.

Most diets restrict the size of your meal portions. With healthy diet, however, portion size is relative. The size of your meals depends on how you're using the diet. Obviously if you want to use this diet to lose weight you are going to go with smaller portion sizes. But if you are following it for athletic purposes you might want to increase your portion sizes.

So the question is: should you follow it for weight loss? It's best if you see your doctor and ask about it. Ask him or her about it then work together to come up with a healthy plan.
