Generally, a cattle fence has to meet two main requirements; to contain the animals within the enclosure and to last long enough. In order of the two requirements to be achieved, the fence design has to be right.

Farmers have two main categories to choose from for fencing. The two options are the electric fence and a conventional fence. While the electric fence uses electric shock as a psychological barrier, the conventional fence uses visual barrier and physical barrier for deterrence. The conventional fences can be constructed using the barbed wire, the plain wires, or the fabricated rolls.

There are several designs that can be used and the design a farmer chooses depends on the animal density, the types of animals in the ranch, the topography (presence of steep slopes, hills, and gullies), chances of flooding, and the budget allocated for the job. Generally, the boundary fences have to be strong. If there is a freeway nearby, the fence has to be even stronger. The internal fences for the paddocks on the other hands do not need to be very strong.

A fence has three basic components; strainer assemblies the main wires, and the intermediate posts. The wires are stretched between the strainers and the posts are used to offer the necessary support. The strainer has two main functions; transferring the tension from the wire to the ground and offering support. The droppers and posts are used to guide the wire, offer lateral pressure resistance and transferring the said pressure to the ground.

The prefabricated rolls of wires are more expensive than the barbed wires and the plain wires. However, they are easy to erect and can be installed very quickly in addition to creating a strong barrier. Other than just the options, the farmer also had to decide on different gauge options and tensile strengths from. The posts can be made from concrete, treated timber, natural timber, steel and flexible plastics.

Basically, a farmer can gain from rich information available on the internet. In addition to this, there are expert contractors who are ready to offer invaluable information and tips that can help you erect a long lasting fence and stop worrying of the cattle roaming out of the ranch and causing losses to the neighbors.
