Culver City: Five Facts You Should Know

As a resident in Culver City, you are probably enjoying the city's excellent weather and easy access to the finest attractions of Los Angeles area, but you do not know a lot of things about the city. Here are some interesting facts about the city that could really surprise you.

For many thousands of years, the Tongva people lived in the area now known as Culver City. Once the Spanish settled in the region, Culver City was part of several different Spanish ranchos. During the Civil War, Camp Latham was here and used as a training facility for Union soldiers.

A promoter named Harry Culver incorporated Culver City, and developed it into an important location for the progressive film-making business in 1917. As a result, the city became a home to several studios from Metro Goldwyn Mayer and other top-notch movie making companies. In fact, popular movies like "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone with the Wind" were partially made and filmed on some of the city's studio lots. Now, the city has become a host to Sony Pictures Studio, which happens to be Culver City's biggest employer with more than 6,000 employees.

Culver City is home to many parks, such as a skate park and a dog park aptly called "The Boneyard." For the most part, their parks showcase a ton of facilities, including kid's playgrounds, basketball courts, softball diamonds, soccer fields and recreation centers. Furthermore, the Culver City also offers the Culver City Public Theater, which offers an array of presentations and open-air productions during the months of summer for free.

The city's downtown area has its own fair share of intriguing historic sites and gems. One of the most popular historic sites on the city's downtown area is the Culver Hotel, a hotel that hosted the cast of "The Wizard of Oz" during their filming stages. Another popular historic site is the Hems Bakery Building. From the early 1930s to 1956, this historic site was owned by a high profile industrial baking company, and is now housing several bars and restaurants as well as housewares and furniture stores.

To get a delightful cup of coffee in Culver City, just walk around the corner from West L.A. College. Island Monarch Coffee offers an amazing, fresh and delightful cup of coffee. Unlike other coffee shops, their beans are all imported from South America and Hawaii and they aren't roasted until after they arrive.
