Facts About Ice Cream & Other Frozen Treats

By Marquerite Velasquez

Ice cream is one of the most sought after and popular sweet treats in the U.S. and it has been this way for many years, and the fact is that on the average, Americans eat about 20 quarts of ice cream in a given year. These are the ice creams sold by your local ice cream store and in the grocery shops in your area, who sell a vast variety of ice cream and related treats. Some facts about these treats can be found below.

In order to officially be labeled as ice cream, this treat must contain 10% or more of milk fat. Generally sweeteners account for an additional 12 to 16% of the product's ingredients, but one of the main ingredients in ice cream is actually air. Ice milk is a similar product, but this is a treat that contains less than 10% of milk fat. Sometimes this is labeled as low-fat ice cream and it is not only lower in fat, it's also typically cheaper. The sugar or sweetener amount in ice milk and ice cream is about the same.

Sherbet, on the other hand, is another popular frozen treat, and like ice milk, sherbet contains less milk fat than ice cream, but more sweetener or sugar than either ice milk or ice cream. Sorbet is another treat you might find at the local ice cream shop, but this is a frozen dessert made from frozen fruit juice or fruit puree that has been sweetened. While it isn't ice cream, it's a nice option for those who do not eat dairy.

Aside from the above mentioned products, there are also other treats similar to ice cream, like if we will mention, is the frozen custard. This is a product with the cream and sugar like in ice cream, but is a product containing eggs. This product, when frozen, can be denser compared to that with ice cream. This is a frozen product invented in the early 20th century in Coney Island and the founders were two ice cream vendors who realized that when eggs were added to the product, the texture of the ice cream improved and the addition seemed to help this product stay cold for periods much longer.

A product that is a favorite in Italy for long is gelato, and this is also a product loved by Americans. In Italian, gelato is the actual word for ice cream and is also similar to American ice cream, but this is a product with less air. Egg yolks are sometimes added, making the product more of custard that is frozen and there are versions such as zabaione, a gelato-type product containing sweet wine.
