By Donna Olson

What is the difference between pastured pigs and factory farm pigs? This is a question that only a few can answer. Free-range pigs are also called pastured whereas to those kept in sheds throughout are referred to factory farm pigs. Apart from the rearing difference, the animals give different end products that come with varying benefits after their consumption. Although it is difficult for you to distinguish products from each other, you can tell by tasting them. This abstract has been prepared to assist you to realize the advantages of keeping and consuming allnatural pastured pork.

Free range or pastured pigs produce quality and tasty pork when compared to pigs that are brought up in fenced and closed up sections. However, pigs that are reared in factory farms are mismanaged and exposed to the unhealthy environment which displays a devastating picture that could deter people from eating them. There are many benefits of eating free-range pigs when compared to other pigs as outlined down here.

Pork has dominant fat that is experienced in both pasture-raised and factory-raised pigs. Similar fat is found olive oils and avocados which makes the food fall into the category of healthy foods. However, when you raise pigs on pasture, they get access to natural sunlight and forage that enhances the richness of micronutrients especially the soluble vitamins. Exposure to sun allows them to be enriched with vitamin D which is also good for the humans.

Further, pasture raised pigs are hardly treated using antibiotics to enhance their feeding like in pigs raised in production factories. They are used to natural grass whereby if fed with deworming drugs, and they can feed without bothering their owners. As such, they eliminate the possibility of antibiotic resistance in your body since they never use them in their lives like those from factories.

Taking care of pigs is not a simple task. They are dirty and hygienic measures of high standards need to be taken. The droppings smell awful and have to be collected by a few individuals under your payroll. Farmers who keep free-range pigs have no expenses for collecting the droppings and experience no bad smell since the pigs drop their thing randomly in the farm improving the fertility levels of the soil.

Pigs are locked up in a single room in factory farms where they can hardly get an opportunity to exercise or get exposure to the sun. As such, they are prevented from having a natural diet, and provision of clean, fresh air. Such conditions predispose them to diseases and dirty environment that makes the thought of eating them look hilarious.

Most of our animal breeds have become extinct from the idea of improving production. People have stopped rearing heritage pigs and started keeping the hybrid ones so that they can breed faster. However, pastured pigs are usually indigenous breeds which are not prone to diseases and pork derived from them is sweeter than you can experience from other pigs.

The decision to keep free-range pigs will depend on the piece of land that a farmer has. Although some people may not be privileged enough to own big lands, they can still keep a few pigs that can feed on the available land. Remember that products derived from free-range animals remain to be the sweetest and healthiest.
