Tips In Finding Great Greek Food Fort Lauderdale

By Robert Lee

You may be reading this article right now for the plain reason that your are in Fort Lauderdale at the moment. And while you are in Florida, you may have a hankering for some great Greek food that your friends have been telling about. Due to this you want to find the best Greek food Fort Lauderdale establishments around. Do read on in this article to give you an inkling on how to look for one that is authentic.

The Greek restaurant is known as a taverna. And these are places where the Greeks showcase the food preparations that they are very much experts at, the meats that are charcoal grilled and spit roasted. Most common in these tavernas are heavy snacks that are called souvlakis, that are basically shish kebabs since they are skewered pieces of meat and vegetables that are seasoned well and grilled to perfection.

The gyro is something that is found in these restaurants also. They are basically souvlakis but wrapped in a pita bread and served with a yogurt cream. The yogurt cream is called tzatziki and must be homemade to be really authentic.

Greek fare is also known for their freshness, and this is a basic rule. Fish and vegetable dishes always are served fresh, and they are also usually served in salads and soups along with other seafood. Fresh is always best and so always look for this in your sampling of Greek food.

Freshly cooked and not heated is the cardinal rule in the taverna. Your food may take a while to serve and this will mean that it was most likely built from scratch and not, thus eating will take a bit of time.

Expect wine to be served in tavernas that you visit, especially if they are the real thing. They will or should have a wide selection of wines for you to choose from and pair with your order and dishes. If you are at a loss as to how to pair what wine with what, then you can ask the staff for help. Also, in Greece and Europe, children are also allowed to have their share of wine, which can be allowed in certain tavernas. Just make sure that your children do not take too much in though.

Prices in the tavernas also should be reasonable and not break the bank. Gyros and such should only be within the ten to fifteen dollar range, and wraps around the eight to ten dollar range. These are of course much higher if you to a much swankier establishment. But in general, the listed prices should be the average across almost all establishments.

And definitely to determine the authenticity of the tavern and food that you are enjoying, just take a quick look at the clientele that are with you. Should they be of Greek and Mediterranean descent then you know that you are in the right place. For of course, who would be the best judges than those who are overtly familiar with it.
