Keep Edibles Fresh With These Easy Walk In Pantry Organization Ideas

By Peter Moore

A lot of people who have extra space to store edibles are pretty fortunate, as this allows them to buy more. However, there are some who may not know how to use pantry space properly. Anyone who just places food anywhere may be doing themselves a disservice. There are many walk in pantry organization ideas that will not help with organization but help food last longer.

If shelves are noticeably taller than everyone in the home, then these can be used to store appliances that are not used often. Getting a foldable step stool is also a great idea if a person is able to reach for items safely. Hard to reach areas are also great for storing seasonal items that are related to food.

Good lighting is essential in every room but since few pantries have a window or opening to let in sunlight, options may be limited. Investing in cool white LED light bulbs is ideal since these burn less energy and tend to be a little brighter than incandescent bulbs. While halogen was once considered ideal for saving energy, these also tend to burn hot.

Once dates have been determined and expired items have been trashed, items that are due to expire should be placed near the front of the shelves. Depending on the item, another way to extend the time would be to see if they can be frozen. However, realize that the taste may not be the same. Bread is a good example of this, as frozen bread would not make a great cold sandwich but great for hot dishes.

Another thing that helps in the sorting process is being able to see everything in the cabinet or on a shelf. If shelving is above eye level, this is the ideal place for large items that are not used often. Everything else should be within reach and risers can be used for small things like seasonings or anything in a small container.

Adding shelves that pull out is not necessarily a job for a licensed carpenter. If a person is handy with basic tools, they can probably do this in a matter of an hour or so. Otherwise, it may help to speak with a professional that can present some ideas, based on size and need.

For those with kitchen accessories that take up a lot of cabinet space, blank pantry walls are the perfect place for hanging. Things that may not be used often, like cooking woks and other large pans, along with bulky electrical appliances. This also helps to clear kitchen counter space.

Since heat can cause certain foods to go bad, find a space in the pantry that is cooler or can benefit from insulation. Compartments or spaces that remain on the cool side are ideal for placing some baking ingredients, or things likely to melt. There are also ways to line drawers or use containers that keep items cooler without electricity.

These tips are designed to help anyone make the most of their space. Sometimes a person may have to try a variety of methods to find one that works for each person. It also helps to have a pattern that makes it easy to clean the space periodically, as a dirty food space is less than appetizing.
