Learn How Red Wine Can Increase You Lifespan

By Polly Perrot

It is generally known that wine offers many benefits to health. There are many studies that show that it is the compound resveratrol in wine that is responsible for all the health benefits of wine. Recently, another study was conducted and found that, not only does resveratrol protect us from many illnesses, it also is potentially able to lengthen a person's lifespan. Learn more about this by reading through the rest of this article.

On July 13, the journal called Nature featured an article about a study done by biologist David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Texas, together with his colleagues from the University of Connecticut and Brown University in Rhode Island. They conducted a study that tackled the effects of resveratrol on the lifespan of fruit flies and worms.

In this study, worms and the flies were fed with resveratrol and lived longer by 30% compared to those that were not. Although this study has not yet been done on humans, the result is already a breakthrough! The biological processes of all creatures are very, very similar. Therefore, if it lengthened these creatures' lifespan, it could probably do the same for humans.

Even before this study, it has already been known that resveratrol is linked to protection against cardiovascular diseases. The reason being that resveratrol has a very high concentration of antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that destroy free radicals in your system that can cause a lot of illnesses.

However, it is not the antioxidant properties of resveratrol that are found to be responsible for this capacity to extend life. Instead, resveratrol is able to do so because of its unique ability to mimic a calorie restricting mechanism responsible for activating Sirtuins. Sirtuins are proteins found in many animals and regulate the aging process.

Well, since it is a known fact that resveratrol decreases the risk of developing strokes, protects from arthritis, improves skin integrity, protects the liver from damage, and so on, then it would make sense that this contributes also to why it lengthens a person's lifespan. Since you are protected from many life threatening illnesses, your lifespan increases dramatically!

With these facts alone, we can conclude that wine is really healthy for us. The most important thing to remember is to drink in moderation. Too much wine can do more harm than good. Moderate drinking means drinking a single small glass of wine every day.
