Detailing Local Vegetables in Text Form

By Rob Sutter

Vegetables were types of food that I always believed were exactly alike, from one crop to another. I didn't think that there was much of a reason to separate them based on certain qualities because, to me, they were all the same. That was before I knew of the differences they shared and what I learned, later on in life, is that they're produced in different areas and carted out in separate ways. Local vegetables are no different and there are facts to learn.

The common theme I've seen in terms of local vegetables is that people mistake them for organic crops. This couldn't be any further from the truth, though, as local basically entails that they were grown in a certain spot and that they'll stay there, retaining freshness. Yes, their cleaning methods may vary from crops which are organic, but the idea of freshness stays constant. It's something that should give people insight when they're looking at Internet platforms like Colle Farmers Market.

Some will tell you that locally grown are the way to go when it comes to your food because freshness can usually amount to a better nutritional value overall. If you buy a crop and wait too long to utilize it, chances are that you're not going to be able to utilize it to its maximum potential. It's going to lose its nutrients, which means that you can't leave it unused for too long. You have time, though, so make sure that you take your time while remaining mindful.

These are facts which stand to be written about but another one that I don't think people pay much mind to is how little attention these farmers are given. For us, it's easy to go to a supermarket and find what we need but the truth is that the smaller sellers deserve attention, too. After all, their crops are most likely going to be fresher and you have a lesser chance of encountering pesticides which can actually be detrimental to one's health in large doses. Simply put, support the sellers others may forget about.

There isn't going to be a lot of simplicity when it comes to writing a book about this subject, I'd imagine. However, it shouldn't be a simple endeavor when you consider that there are a lot of facts concerning local vegetables that I didn't even know existed. I didn't know of the work that went into harvesting them or the nutritional facts which are native to them. I've learned that they are fascinating and if the chance comes, I'd like to learn more.
