Dulcia Domestica Hits The Spot As An Italian Dessert Recipe

By Allan Hatchell

If you are looking for an Italian dessert recipe which will add a real touch of luxury to the menu of your next dinner party, then Dulce Domestica is a great one to try. There are many dessert recipes for sale from Italy out there, with so much more than ice cream on offer. This recipe is a rich dish, which was apparently popular with the Ancient Romans.

This dish is believed to date back to the time of Ancient Rome, and there is certainly a richness to it that could almost be considered decadent. A simple to prepare dish which requires a little skill and delicacy to get perfectly right, this dessert will leave your dinner guests purring. The combination of dates and nuts is simply superb.

First of all, you need ingredients, in this case you will require around 12 dates and an ounce of chopped and toasted pine nuts. Three tablespoons of red wine and four of honey help to give the dish its appealing richness. You can also add a teaspoon of black pepper if you want.

Preparing the ingredients for cooking should not take long, around 10 to 15 minutes or so. This might be even quicker if you have bought dates which already have had the stones removed. Stuff the chopped nuts into the space in the date where the stone once was and you should find it relatively straightforward.

Once you have stuffed all the dates, then put them in a pan warmed to a medium heat. As they cook, drizzle the wine and the honey over them, but you must take care with the amount of honey you use, as too much might make the dates stick to the pan. Cook them for around 15 minutes or so, or until the skins start to peel from the dates.

If you want, you can also sprinkle over the pepper, though this is optional and not essential for the dish's success. Then remove the dates from the pan and place them in a serving dish. Leave them to cool a little before serving, and eat them from the serving dish with your fingers for a really Ancient Roman touch.

This Italian dessert recipe will perhaps look unfamiliar to those who like more usual Italian American cuisine, but it tastes fantastic. Its rich combination of fruit, wine and honey really produces a luxurious flavour. Try it, and impress your guests with a real taste of Ancient Rome.
