How To Find A Kosher MRE

By Marci Glover

Sometimes you do not want to cook a meal from scratch. You may only have an hour or so before a meeting or you only have a half an hour lunch break. In this instance grabbing a ready to eat meal is ideal. Unfortunately this can be complicated if you are Jewish and strictly observe rules regarding what you eat. Fortunately there is an alternative and there are a number of companies that produce kosher MRE products.

The term MRE stands for Meal Ready to Eat. The idea is that you can take something and put it in the oven or microwave. The speed with which you can get it cooked is often one of the biggest reasons that people purchase them. You do not have to worry about putting ingredients together.

However a common fear people have is how these meals are put together. If the meal contains meat there is concern about how the animals have been treated. With regards to kosher there is also the concern that the animals have been properly slaughtered in keeping with Jewish law and legal guidelines.

However with kosher the quality of the food is not the sole issue. The main issue is ensuring that what you eat is suitable for you to eat. On a basic level this means that certain foods such as seafood are outright forbidden. Therefore the meals should not be prepared on a factory line alongside foods that might contain seafood and other items that Jewish people are not allowed to eat.

Kosher is not solely about the type of food that people eat. For example there are strict rules regarding the mixing of dairy and meat with cutlery and crockery in Jewish kitchen in separate areas in order to ensure meat and dairy do not mix. With a factory process it can be difficult to ensure that cross contamination takes place which is why some food labels will warn of items could potentially contain nuts if they are handled on a factory line with products that contain nuts and so forth.

Traditionally it was the job of a rabbi to inspect where food was being prepared. They would check to ensure that a butcher slaughtered the animals in the right way. They would also check that meat would be cooked in a safe way. For example when cooking beef they would be prepared in salt and blood would be drained from the animal.

There is also the issue of the quality of the food itself. Even if they strictly adhere to traditional guidelines this does not necessarily mean you will get good food. You have to be sure that what you are buying is tasty and worth the effort. Furthermore it is also making sure that the food is relatively easy to prepare.

You can order ready to eat meals from a number of different sources. A quick check online should help you find companies that can produce a number of different ready to eat dishes you can either purchase in store or purchase directly from companies through their website. It is also worth checking customer reviews and feedback to see what ones provide the best taste and value for money so that you can choose the best kosher food to suit your tastes.
