What To Look For When Choosing In Denver Coffee Roasters For Your Kitchen

By Marci Glover

People who take their coffee seriously will appreciate the benefits of owning an automatic coffee roaster. These machines allow the user to roast as many fresh beans as he or she wants at one time, for a crisp, flavorful taste that hasn't faded like most store-bought brands. In Denver coffee roasters can be purchased in many home and kitchen stores, but they come in different styles with varying features, so the buyer should first know a little about them.

One thing to consider is how many beans one wants to roast at a time, which corresponds to typical coffee consumption. Generally about four ounces of unroasted beans will yield 26 to 42 cups. Beans should be roasted at most three days before they will be used, in order to maintain freshness, most people prefer to roast daily. Different models have varying capacities.

The quality of the beans' flavor can vary depending on the way in which they were roasted. Air roasters offer faster roasting and a strong flavor, whereas drum roasting is a slower process which results in a subtle but full-bodied taste.

A roaster can be used indoors on the kitchen counter or outside in the backyard, some types lend themselves more to one location than the other depending on their design. No matter where the unit is placed, they normally work better when the surrounding temperature is warmer. Some have been built to give off less smoke too, which is ideal for indoor use. Easy cleaning and maintenance with removable, washable parts is another aspect to consider.

The most popular types of home roasters are air and drum designs. The former roasts in less time and produces a bolder flavor, while the latter slowly seals in a full-body taste. Those who are considering buying a roaster need to know what each type has to offer and what's involved in its use so they can choose the one which suits them best.

Air roasters work much like an air popper used for making popcorn. Beans rotate through a current of forced, hot air which evenly roasts them. These models usually have smaller capacities and are suitable for someone who wishes to prepare a fresh pot of coffee for himself or herself and another person.

Drum roasters have typically higher capacities and contain the beans in a heated cylinder which revolves horizontally. Inside the drum, is a paddle that moves the beans along so they will roast in an even manner. The drum itself can be either a solid or perforated structure, the latter permits a better flow of hot air, thus roasting the beans more thoroughly. The process is typically about 14-20 minutes, and takes longer if a darker roast is desired.

After deciding on a particular style of roaster, one can look at such details as specific features available on different models. One may want to consider the types of controls it has, programming options, and if it has been designed to produce less smoke. Usually drum roasters offer a wider range of features than an air roaster which has a simpler design.
