Peels are sprinkled with cornmeal so that the dough slides with ease. Barbecue grills have also been used to bake the meal and in Chicago-style variants, pans are used for baking.

The bottoms of the flatbread are called crusts and they are made differently in different variants. Crusts are very thin in some variants while in some they are made very thick. Most crusts are made plain, but it is not uncommon to find some that are seasoned with herbs, garlic, and cheese among other ingredients.

When the meal is prepared using the right ingredients in the right way, it is very healthy. However, many US restaurant chains are criticized for using unhealthy ingredients making it unhealthy. The huge amounts of salt, food energy, and fat added make this meal very unhealthy.
