The College Bar And Its Qualities

By Debra Wood

Many towns all around the country are known for being the hosts of college or university campuses. These places are known as college and university towns, and the life in these places is linked to the highs and lows of the academic environment. Locals know their students and consider themselves able support for students wherever they may live in the town.

Southern schools that are known for their charisma as well as turning out excellent graduates in specific courses are many. One of the most distinguished of these is Virginia Tech or Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, served by the college bar Blacksburg. This has evolved from an old style military school but is still a power in turning out the best engineering graduates.

In the city the campus of this school has a family history that dates back centuries. The Black family patriarch Samuel gave the land area for the current VT campus through the property he gave his son John, while he gave Blacksburg its downtown through land he bequeathed his son William. Both students and residents have benefited from these bequests.

Any student in search of a place with excellent vibes for hanging out and having something to drink can find it here. Here, it is all about heady academic stuff aided by drinks, and many kinds of fun activities can be found. These are varied, from meeting members of the opposite sex, to simply hanging out with fraternity brothers or Friday night socials.

Saturday will find the typical place here packed with dating couples and patrons in search of a drink. Most of the locations are where you can mingle with peers, and they are not too exclusive or expensive. The features of any one bar are replete with student history perhaps, and offer things that make for unique student experiences.

Some bars specialize in sporting games that can be conducted while drinking. Darts are the most popular games, while there can be others available, depending on preference or availability, things like board games. There will be a TV or two in most places, and there are those which feature all kinds of sports channels on many TV sets.

Bars may have some food on the menu, but this is an option reserved only for those in desperate need of something to eat. The prevailing spirit is for quaffing heroic quantities of alcohol even as the food items can be considered good enough local favorites. Students are known as Hokies here and they can be of any persuasion depending on what bar is patronized.

There are about a dozen or more of these places serving students in the downtown Blacksburg area. Some cater to varsity sports, especially those beloved by the crowds in Virginia Tech. Some others are the fratty types, with ritual things like covers and a welcoming drink that have strong alcoholic content.

Bars accommodate the student rhythms, whether the need is for a drink, some companionship or usually both, and they know how to take care of rowdy academic hijinks. Most people here know most other folks and Blacksburg is one of those known to be a great place to live in the South.
