Choosing The Right Amount Of Wine For A Special Occasion Celebration

By David Dienger

There are many times in life that call for celebration. They may be milestones in one's personal life or in the life of someone the person knows, that deserve to be honored. Many such events include fermented drinks of some type, leaving the planner to wonder about choosing the right amount of wine for a special occasion.

Parties of all types can be enhanced by serving spirits. Whether a party at the office for someone who is retiring or a young couple getting married, the method of selection remains the same. It ensures that plenty of drinks are on hand for the event.

How much to buy?

These types of calculations require the ability to deal with ratios. It is helpful to remember each bottle can yield about five glasses. While this does not fill the glass to the rim, it is a solid 5 ounce serving. This means 12 bottles can fill about 60 glasses, plenty for a party of 30, especially in a business setting where parties last about an hour and most are unwilling to over-imbibe. In social settings, the ratio should be bumped to three drinks per hour.

What About the Ratio of White to Red?

For many years the rule of thumb was a 1:2 ratio of whites to reds. There seems to be a change in the air with more people preferring the lighter whites, upping the ratio to a 2:3 number of bottles. However, those who have a good knowledge of the people in attendance can make better plans. It is always better to end the day with leftovers that for the party to come to a screeching halt due to a lack of drink.

Can I Find Choices in my Budget?

If concerned about cost, look at less expensive products from Portugal, Spain, Southern France or Chile. Remember it is more expensive to make better wines so the manufacturer must pass these costs along. Parties at the office do well with easy going wines. In big social events, pair the selection with the meal.

What About Liquor Permits?

In some countries, such as Canada, serving alcohol outside a private home or licensed establishment requires a liquor permit. If giving drinks away, it can be purchased for a nominal fee at a liquor store. Always be aware of local regulations regarding serving alcohol before making the purchase.

Even though you may keep a bottle in the basement yearning for release, it is also nice to buy a case occasionally for everyday use. This can also ensure one has plenty for an impromptu event at home or a bottle to take to a friend's home. If interested in building a cellar, replace each bottle opened with two more. This will help to build a well stocked cellar in no time.

The best tip for choosing the right amount of wine for a special occasion is to follow the ratios. Know the number of guests, length of party and drinks per bottle for a simple calculation. This ensures adequate preparation.

Cheers
