Make An Easy Ethical Lifestyle Choice With Vegan Frozen Meals

By Jaclyn Hurley

These days it's becoming increasingly important to think about your choices as a consumer and how these choices impact on the world around you. This is why so many people are now becoming vegans. They make the ethical choice of living a lifestyle that is friendlier to animals and the environment. Of course it's not that easy to just give up the foods that you've always enjoyed, but vegan frozen meals are a great way to ease the transition.

Vegans are people who don't eat any animal products whatsoever. This means that unlike vegetarians, who usually eat dairy and often egg products, vegans stay away from foods like cheese, yogurt, milk and even honey. The reason for this choice is often religion or the ethics involved in animal husbandry.

It's not difficult to eat only vegan meals. You simply need to put in a bit of effort when you cook, just like with any other kind of diet. For many people this is where the challenge comes in because you don't always have the time or the energy to spend hours in the kitchen. Luckily a frozen meal requires not much more than taking it from the freezer, removing the lid and switching on the oven.

Veganism is especially easy if you like ethnic foods. Indian curries are one of the most common ways to eat well without having to rely on meat or dairy products for taste and substance. The cuisines of other Asian countries like China, Japan and the nations of Southeast Asia are particularly suited to veganism too. However, you'll also find plenty of options in the cuisines of, for instance, Latin America or the Middle East.

Many people think that vegans only rely on curry, hummus or less familiar foods such as quinoa, or that alternatively they eat only healthy dishes such as salads. However, vegans love comfort food just like everybody else. Pot pies and pasta dishes such as macaroni and cheese can easily be incorporated into a vegan diet by simply using dairy-free cheese and butter substitutes.

You can also enjoy your favorite fast foods in animal-friendly versions. Burgers and hot dogs can be made from soy, lentils, beans or other legumes and some manufacturers have perfected recipes where you won't even realize you're not eating the real thing. Because of the many cheese substitutes available, you don't have to give up grilled cheese sandwiches or pizza either.

There are plenty of dessert options that you can store in the freezer for later use too. Egg-free cakes and baked desserts are easy to find and to make. Ice cream doesn't have to be in the form of sorbet but can have a creamy taste with the addition of avocado or coconut milk. Even chocoholics can get their fix with dairy-free chocolate as an ingredient in, for example, brownies.

Frozen meals that are suitable for vegans are easy to come by these days. Most grocery stores stock some but for a wider variety, you may want to visit your local health-food store. You can also order dishes online. Another option is to prepare extra whenever you cook and just freeze portions for those days when you don't have the time or energy to spend in the kitchen.
