Baklava Is A Unique Treat

By Essie Osborn

When it comes to planning an event, whether it is for social or business purposes, the objective is to give people something they will talk about and share with others. Those who are planning these events may have visuals designed to impress or they may have an elaborate menu, or a little of both. One delectable treat that stands out is baklava.

This dessert originates from Greece though there are many recipes that are claimed by other countries, including the United States. Inside are a variety of nuts, and maybe dried fruits layered between phyllo dough sheets covered in butter and honey or syrup. Once baked, this crunchy goodness stands on its own as being a dessert that is hard to put down. It may also be served at casual gatherings.

While there are many recipes for this Greek dish, some may find that their local bakery has these in many flavors, such as hazelnut, pistachio, and walnut. Some bakeries use dried fruits like dates along with an abundance of spices that include cinnamon, clove, and vanilla. These treats would not have their sticky consistency without the use of real honey or sugar syrup.

When it comes to creating a fascinating menu, some old classics may find new life with a few tweaks. Meatballs are not only easy to make but inexpensive and versatile when it comes to flavors. These days, they are used for more than pasta entrees or submarine sandwiches and can be made with a number of meat products.

Not long ago, turkey meatballs topped with teriyaki sauce and pineapple chunks were popular at parties. However, there is a Greek recipe that complements this type of dessert and is easy to make. With the use of herbs and spices such as cilantro, jalapeno, and mint mixed into the ground meat mixture. While many of these recipes use lamb or veal, something low in fat like turkey will do also.

There are similar appetizers of Greek origin that anyone can try out such as spinach and feta cheese bake, dolamathes, or the traditional stuffed grape leaves. These are full of flavor and bound to get people talking as it may have been unexpected. One great thing is these are economical as well as easy to make.

Sometimes when people are planning an event, it can be hard to determine whether it is best to play things safe or step out of the norm. When in doubt, a person can do a few things so they will not chance offending their guests. The first is to find out what has been a hit for years and the second is to choose a place that has a great reputation and prides itself on serving quality.

However, most people will be there to enjoy themselves, as everything at the serving table should be fun and flavorful. Although it is near impossible to please everyone, anything with a nice arrangement should be enough to pique the curiosity of the hungry guest. These are just some of the things to think about when planning a social event.
