Choosing The Best Delicatessen Sydney

By Cornelia White

For some people it may be tempting to ask why someone would choose to go to a delicatessen Sydney as opposed to buying food from a supermarket. Admittedly supermarkets can stock a wide range of foods and some may be of equal quality to the items available in a deli. However as with any business some will be better than others and it is worth knowing what to look for.

Ideally a deli will sell mainly fresh food. This is not always possible but part of the appeal is being able to purchase fresh items you may not necessarily be able to find in a supermarket. This is the kind of thing that can make an otherwise ordinary lunch that bit more pleasurable.

Before you choose a deli think about the kind of foods you like. A lot of delis tend to focus on Mediterranean foods mainly because they tend to work well with people who want to pick and choose items. Olives, picked chillies and other items are often nice extras that can make a picnic or improvised dinner more appealing.

However this does not necessarily have to be the only style of food that a deli can offer. Often it will depend on the background of the person running it. For example if someone is from South Africa or South African parentage then they may be more likely to know where to source biltong or other native South African foods.

However just because these are fresh does not necessarily mean they are the best in terms of taste. This is where a deli can often have the advantage over a supermarket. They tend to be more willing to offer people free samples and give them a chance to discover new tastes for themselves. Another advantage is that you can often ask for a thicker slice of meat or cheese, something that may not necessarily be possible in a smaller supermarket that only offers products that are prepacked.

It is also worth finding out if they make any products themselves. Freshly baked bread, specially made pies and so forth can often have that extra bit of style and depth of flavour that you will not get from a supermarket. While it may cost a bit more the quality is often what makes the difference.

The crucial difference between a deli and the equivalent at a supermarket is the level of quality. While there are supermarkets that can offer very good products it is unlikely that they can match the level of service that the best delis can offer. The best ones will make an effort to give you the best service as well as finding foods that you may not necessarily find on the supermarket shelves.

You can look online to find a delicatessen Sydney near you. With social media it is now also a lot easier to ask people to recommend a good place. The chances are these are places you will have walked past without thinking about it. Look online for more information and feedback to help find a great deli near you.
