Michigan's Sault Ste. Marie Area Has Amazing Scenery

By Frances Allen

Michigan encourages visitors to travel to the northernmost regions of the state. There is spectacular scenery to be enjoyed every season of the year. The twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario are separated the St. Mary's River and connected by an international bridge. The upper peninsula has so much to see and do that the choices will impress even the most sophisticated travelers.

No trip here would be complete without a visit to the Soo Locks. They are one of the largest and busiest engineering achievements in the northern hemisphere. From May through October you have an opportunity to book a cruise in order to experience firsthand the massive amount of ships that pass through the locks each day. Lighthouse cruises, dining cruises, and fireworks cruises are available.

Tahquamenon Falls is another site of amazing beauty. If you have the chance, you should visit both the upper and lower levels. They are completely different, but are equally impressive. These waterfalls are larger than any other you will find east of the Mississippi River. There are plenty of hiking trails and paths to explore. If you get hungry, the brewery has delicious menu items to choose from.

Not everywhere in the country can offer shipwreck attractions for its thousands of annual visitors. The Manhattan sank in Lake Superior at the beginning of the twentieth century, and there are still remnants at the lake bottom for interested scuba divers to see. You can also book a glass bottom boat tour that will take you to the site of another shipwreck. Amazingly the wreckage is located only a few feet below sea level.

Train tours are always fun and a great way to see a lot of this region in a short amount of time. The Agawa Canyon has train tours when weather permits. There are even stops along the way for people to get out and spend an hour or two hiking through the wilderness park.

For the gamblers, Kewadin Casino is conveniently located just minutes from Soo Locks. After spending the day enjoying the natural beauty of the region, it might be time for some fine dining and entertainment along with a pass by the gaming tables. DreamMakers Theater offers top class musicians who routinely play here. If you want something a little more intimate, there is a lounge that offers karaoke and comedy nights.

The Northern Lights are a naturally occurring phenomenon visible in this area. They appear as a result of certain activity on the sun, but just when and where they show up is anybody's guess. Spring and fall are the seasons the light show most often appears. A lot of people do online research to see if conditions will be right when they are in the area.

Vacationing in northern Michigan is a special experience. It will make you appreciate just what an amazing world we live in.
