Below are some things that should be remembered when planning to store emergency foods in the pantry:

-You can store emergency foods little by little. You can start storing the most essential like staple foods, canned goods and those foods that have longer shelf life and needs no refrigeration.

-Always check the expiration date of the food you are storing. You don't want to store a food that will expire soon since it means you need to consume those foods in no time and buy again foods to store.

-Make sure that your pantry or the area where you store your emergency foods and supplies is cool, dry and clean. Aside from that make sure also that it is free from rodents and insects that possibly contaminate your emergency foods.

-Be sure to include potable water to be consumed by you and your family because the body needs water in order to live and survive.

-Try to avoid foods that are difficult to prepare, unhealthy and as much as possible those that require refrigeration. When you are in a calamity or emergency situation you don't have all the time in the world to cook your food. Also, choosing energy-providing and energy-boosting food is advisable to make sure that your body is well-provided with the energy it needs especially in emergency situations.

-Emergency medicines, battery, flashlights, blanket, emergency lights and matches are essential things than can be very helpful during emergency situations and thus should be included in your supply storage.

-When storing emergency foods, take into consideration the individual needs of each family members. If you have an infant in the family, make sure to store foods that an infant can eat.

-Find time to check your stored emergency foods once in a while. You don't have to check very often but you have to check often enough to see if there are items that are about to expire and needs replacement and check to see if your stored emergency foods are still safe from contamination.

-Make sure to store emergency foods that will be sufficient for you and your family's consumption for at least a couple of days. When a disaster or calamity happens, there is a tendency that you will have difficulty finding food supplies for at least a couple of days. Storing enough food for your family for more than 72 hours will at least give you time where to find food supplies in case your food storage will not be enough.
