Tips For Making Great Chocolate Covered Popcorn Treats

By Lana Bray

If you crave a snack, think about whether you prefer something sweet, or something that is salty. If you cannot decide, perhaps you should try chocolate covered popcorn. This tasty treat may satisfy your cravings for salty and sweet snacks.

First, spray a big baking pan with some non-stick cooking spray. Butter flavored cooking spray is a good choice. Next, pour about 10 cups of popped corn into the baking pan. It is best to use air-popped corn because it is considered to be the healthiest type you can eat and does not leave residue from the oil. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Do not make the oven too hot.

Then, mix together 1/2 cup of butter with 2 cups of your favorite cocoa chip pieces. Add a cup of corn syrup to this, and pour the mixture in a separate pan. Heat it slowly over medium heat. Ensure that you stir the mixture constantly, until you see it froth and boil. You must be careful that it does not burn, boil over, or work down too much.

Pour the mixture over the popcorn. Stir and toss the mixture thoroughly so that all of it is covered. Bake it for 45 minutes in the oven, while stirring it often. Once you have baked it, allow it to cool completely, before breaking it up into smaller pieces. Store the snack in clean plastic bags or seal-able containers.

If baking does not appeal to you, or if the summer months are too hot to turn on an oven, you may want to try the no-bake version of this recipe instead. This recipe is very easy and equally as tasty as the baked recipe. Begin by spraying a large bowl with some non-stick cooking spray and pouring 12 cups of popped corn into the same bowl.

Melt down some butter over a low heat. A tablespoon of butter should be sufficient. Then, mix 1/4 cup of corn syrup with 3 tablespoons of dry cocoa powder. Either milk chocolate or dark chocolate are good choices. Add to this three tablespoons of skim milk or whole milk. Then add a bit of salt.

Stir together constantly, until the mixture starts to boil. Pour this over your popped corn, toss it all together, and make sure all the pieces are coated well. Then, spread the mixture in a thick layer onto a greased cookie tray. Let this stand for a while until it is completely cool. When the food is ready, bag it up in sandwich bags, or use storage containers.

To spice up the recipe a bit, try adding nuts, such as peanuts or chocolate covered walnuts, to your popcorn after you have prepared it. You can also melt white or dark chocolate for added flavor and drizzle it over the chocolate covered popcorn. This is a tasty treat for people who want a snack that combines salty and sweet flavor. You can take it with you to work, school, or in your travels.
