Some steps of cooking or ingredients cannot be substituted or eliminated while others can. The amount of some items may be increased or decreased as per your taste. Such minor adjustments are made to suit preferred taste according to an individual. One can substitute related items such as replacing white beans with red ones.

Although it is beneficial to follow instructions as per the cookbook, some deviations are worthwhile and unavoidable. In some cases, one item may not be available or you may not like it at all. In other instances, a person may do alterations so as to lower fats or calories.

If you are preparing a recipe for the first time, it is recommended that you stick to the stipulated instructions. This is in order to achieve that desired look and taste of a particular dish as intended by the author of a cookbook.
