Finding The Right Beer Making Supplies

By Karen Wood

Many people enjoy home brewing as a hobby and it continues to grow in popularity. Many different brews can be made by amateurs in their homes with a little practice and it can be a very cost effective way of enjoying a pint. If you are brewing at home, at some point you will need to look for beer making supplies and there are a couple of places to obtain these items.

The usual starting point for most home brewers are the stores that can be found on the high streets that specialize in selling beer making equipment and ingredients. The shops will have everything you require in stock from the smallest items of kit to ingredients and other accessories. One of the plus points of using local stores is that you will be able to ask the advice of the staff that will be happy to help with your selection of equipment and give you tips on brewing technique.

Another place to source your brewing supplies is from one of the many online companies that specialize in beer making equipment. These sites will have an extensive stock of equipment and ingredients for you to create a brew. Bear in mind that when ordering items from an internet site you will have to add shipping costs to the total price of the order.

The equipment you need depends on how much beer you intend to produce and what kind of ale. Any brews can be made at home including dark ales, stouts and ciders. Most people will use kits when they first start due to the fact that only sugar and water needs to be added to get a brew going. These kits are reasonably priced and are a great way to start making your own ales.

For amateur brewers who have a little more experience there is the option to buy separate ingredients to create their own unique ales. Malt extracts, yeasts and hops can all be purchased from brew shops. Other items such as fruit flavorings and specialist sugars are also stocked by many suppliers. Recipe books for you to follow are available and can be a useful buy.

Essential items you need will be a vessel to brew the beer, bottles to store it in when ready and capping tools and labels. Sterilizing kit will also be needed to keep everything clean and bacteria free. All equipment will need to be thoroughly cleaned before and after each batch is brewed to avoid contamination and a ruined brew.

Other useful items can also be found at suppliers and many are worth picking up to help the new comer to the hobby. Books, DVD's and videos can be beneficial as they will guide you through the process and give helpful advice. Recipe books and sheets can be found too allowing you to create a beer from scratch.

In many neighborhoods there are also home brewing clubs that can be joined for a monthly fee. These are most useful as they will also sell all the items you need and they often work out cheaper than stores due to members discounts. As well as being able to buy supplies it allows members to meet on a regular basis to discuss recipe ideas, tips and techniques.
