Why You Should Buy Fresh Seafood Online

By Carolyn Anderson

The ocean is a virtual treasure trove of creatures that taste delicious to people. Whether cooked or raw, fish is not only delicious, but is generally very healthy and an good source of protein. Best of all, you do not even need to leave your house to get some. You can order fresh seafood online and have the best of the sea sent directly to your front door, ready to be cooked and eaten.

Many sellers online get the fish from the ocean and pack and freeze it within hours so that it stays at the height of freshness when it reaches you. No more wondering how long that shrimp has been in the case at your grocery store. Your purchase goes from the water to the freezer to your door quickly and efficiently.

Once you place your order, your choices are packed in a disposable cooler with ice packs or dried ice. This is plenty of ice to keep everything frozen until it gets to you. Nothing will melt, so the integrity of all your food will be kept intact and there are no worries about food poisoning or anything like that.

Most of these seafood orders are packed same or next day and shipped quickly. You will generally get it within two days, though you can pay extra for overnight or expedited shipping. The weekends are a whole different animal, though. Because the major carriers have no or very limited service on weekends, orders are held for packing until Monday. Your seafood will stay out of a hot warehouse or delivery truck all weekend, and you get a fresh delivery early in the week instead.

As for what you can order, you can get anything that is available at a grocery store, plus lots of rare or specialty foods that you may not be able to get any other way. First there is whole fish, which allow you to practice your deboning and filet skills. It also saves you money, since whole fish are generally cheaper than fish that have already been cut and cleaned, since there is less labor involved. As a bonus you can use the bones and some other pieces to make fish stock.

If whole fish is not your thing, then you can go for the convenience of filets or fish steaks. These are already cut and have the bones removed. In some cases the skin is removed too, though you can order certain cuts with the skin on if that is your preferred taste or texture.

In addition to regular fish, shellfish are another big draw for online buyers. There are oysters and scallops that have already been shucked and are ready to cook. During certain seasons, lobster and crabs can also be purchased. Shrimp are available all year of various sizes.

In addition, most sellers have at least a few prepared dishes that you just have to pop in the oven or microwave to heat through. This is a huge time saver, and makes for an impressive spread of food when you have guests over.
